HOW WIRED WILL (AND WON’T) USE GENERATIVE AI

WIRED magazine announced how they’ll use AI, and while the entire article is worth reading, there’s a few things that were of interest to me:

  • They won’t use AI to shrink articles, e.g. turn a 1,200 word story into 900 words because editing is a matter of judgment about what is most relevant, original, or entertaining about the piece.
  • They will use AI to suggest social media copy
  • They might use AI to generate story ideas (e.g. “Suggest stories about the impact of genetic testing on privacy”)
  • They won’t use AI-generated images or video, largely because there are a lot of potential legal issues (artists and image libraries are suing the image generators for violating copyright by using their work as training data)
  • They will use AI tools to spark ideas, as a visual equivalent of brainstorming

If you read the entire piece, you’ll find that this is a very thoughtful and balanced approach to the use of AI, probably the best I’ve come across from major publications.
